Jan. 18—With three players scoring in double figures, South Decatur rolled to another MHC victory Thursday, knocking off the visiting Lady Mohawks of Waldron 46-33.
The Lady Cougars improve to 10-9 on the season and 3-1 in the MHC. Waldron drops to 6-12 overall and 2-3 in conference action.
South jumped out to a 13-4 lead after the first quarter. Taylor Somers scored the first four points for South and then senior Paige McQueen drained a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Makayla Somers added a bucket before McQueen scored her eighth point of the quarter.
The Lady Cougars outscored Waldron 12-11 in the second quarter. Raegan Benge led South with six points in the frame. McQueen, Taylor Somers and Makayla Somers all added two as South led 25-15 at the half.
South outscored Waldron 16-11 in the third quarter. After Makayla Somers got South on the board in the quarter, McQueen scored five straight for the Lady Cougars. McQueen hit 5-of-5 from the charity stripe in the quarter and South took a 41-26 lead to the fourth quarter.
The Lady Cougars only scored five points in the final quarter, four by Makayla Somers, but the early lead was too much for Waldron to overcome.
For South, Makayla Somers scored 14 points followed by Taylor Somers 13, McQueen 11, Raegan Benge six and Dalilah Martin two. Makayla Somers completed the double-double with 13 rebounds. McQueen and Martin both dished out three assists and senior Makayla Pucket added two assists. Taylor Somers added five steals.
North Decatur 67 Southwestern (Shelby) 27
The Lady Chargers improved to 11-6 (2-1 in MHC) on the season, stampeding to a win over MHC foe Southwestern (Shelby) 67-27.
After an early 3-pointer by the Lady Spartans, the Lady Chargers’ offense took over, scoring 23 points in the first eight minutes of action. North led 23-10 heading to the second quarter. In the second, North had nearly as good a point total, scoring 20 points to lead 43-15 at the halftime break.
The Lady Chargers doubled up the Lady Spartans 24-12 in the second half to cruise to the win.
North outscored the Spartans 24-12 in the second half with a balanced attack from multiple Chargers getting in the scorebook. North shot 70 percent from the charity stripe (7-of-10), but the Lady Spartans were even better, going 11-of-12.
North’s Madi Allen led all scorers with 21 points. Carmen Thackery was next in the balanced North attack with nine points. Joe Whitaker scored nine points followed by Ally Whitaker seven, Clare Kinker six, Jewel Verseman five, Sarah Moeller four, Kelsey Haley three, Libby Crawford two and Emma Schoettmer two.
East Central 52 Rushville 29
Host East Central jumped out to a 29-11 lead at the half and went on to the 52-29 EIAC victory over Rushville. The Lady Trojans improve to 9-8 overall and 4-1 in the EIAC. Rushville drops to 7-13 on the season and 2-3 in the EIAC.
Trisha Morgan led the Lady Lions in scoring with 11 points. Carly Senour and Kelsey Morgan both added five points. Charlotte Caviness, Mikayla Herbert, Gracie Buzzard and Makenna Ripberger all scored two points.
Senour, Kelsey Morgan and Ripberger all grabbed four rebounds to share team-high honors. Caviness, Senour, Buzzard and Ripberger all dished out two assists.
East Central won the junior varsity game 46-36.
Scoring for the Lady Lions included Charlie Marcum 10 points, Kiarra Flannery six points, Josie Corn six points, Emily Rouse five points, Jerrica Taylor four points, Caviness three points and Becca Tabeling two points.
