Girls basketball: Lady Chargers complete season sweep of SD

Jan. 20—Early in the regular season, North Decatur posted a 2-point win at South Decatur. Saturday, the Lady Chargers took control early en route to a 36-27 victory.

North improves to 12-6 on the season and 3-1 in the MHC. South drops to 10-10 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

North opened the game on a 7-0 run. Madi Allen and Kelsey Haley combined for the seven points. South got on the board with a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Paige McQueen with less than one minute to play in the first quarter. North answered as Allen drained a 3-pointer and drew a foul. After dropping in the free throw, the Lady Chargers led 11-3 heading to the second quarter.

The Lady Chargers continued the scoring streak, scoring the first 10 points of the second quarter. Haley found Carmen Thackery for the easy bucket to open the quarter. Later in the quarter, a 3-pointer from the right-corner by Haley was followed by a Thackery baseline jumper to extend North’s lead to 21-3. McQueen connected on a left corner 3-pointer and Taylor Somers scored in the paint as South closed the half on a 5-0 run to head to the break trailing 21-8.

In the third quarter, North added two points to its lead. Allen poured in eight points and Ally Whitaker added a bucket for the Lady Chargers. For South, McQueen hit her third 3-pointer of the game. Taylor Somers also dialed long distance and Makayla Somers scored her first bucket. Heading to the fourth quarter, North led 31-16.

South picked up the defensive intensity in the fourth quarter and was able to outscore the Lady Chargers 11-5 in the final eight minutes. Allen had four points and Thackery hit a free throw for North. South’s Makayla Puckett had five points in the quarter, including a 3-pointer. Dalilah Martin added four points and Makayla Somers scored two points.

For North, Allen led all scorers with 23 points. Haley finished with six points followed by Thackery with five and Ally Whitaker with two. The Lady Chargers were 8-of-11 from the free throw line.

South was led by McQueen with nine points. Puckett and Taylor Somers both had five points. Martin and Makayla Somers both had four points. The Lady Cougars were 0-of-1 from the free throw line.

Greensburg 73 Scottsburg 38

Another opponent, another victim. The No. 1 Lady Pirates continue to rack up victories on the season, moving to 18-0 with a 73-38 victory over visiting Scottsburg (7-11) Saturday.

Scottsburg was able to stay within striking distance in the early going. The Lady Pirates led by seven, 21-14, at the end of the first quarter. After Scottsburg hit a 3-pointer to stay within single digits in the second quarter, Greensburg started to pull away. A 15-2 run put the Lady Pirates in front 46-24 at the half.

Greensburg put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring Scottsburg 22-4 to take a 66-28 lead to the fourth quarter.

The Lady Pirates were led in scoring by Leah West with 32 points. Miley Wilkison finished with 20 points. Claire Larrison was also in double figures with 10 points. Aly Powers scored five points. Emma McQueen and Aubrie Barnes-Pettit both had three points.

The Lady Pirates travel to Batesville Saturday.

Batesville 42 Indian Creek 21

Batesville doubled up visiting Indian Creek 42-21 Friday. In a low-scoring first half, Batesville led 17-5 at the half before pulling away for the win.

For the Lady Bulldogs Madelyn Haskamp led the way in scoring with 11 points. Alyson Peters scored seven points followed by Lydia Haskamp seven, Sophia Gesell six, Molly Gesell four, Nora Wiedeman three, Kaylin Kathmann two and Jelinek one.

Batesville (13-7) travels to Rushville (7-14) Thursday.

Seymour 44 Rushville 32

On the road at Seymour (6-12), Rushville (7-14) trailed by four points or less at the end of each of the first three quarter, but could not get over the hump as the Lady Owls held off the Lady Lions 44-32.

Seymour led 8-4 after the first eight minutes and 14-13 at the half. After three quarters, Seymour held a 28-24 lead.

Rushville was led in scoring by Trisha Morgan with 10 points. Carly Senour added nine points followed by Makenna Ripberger six, Kelsey Morgan three, Charlotte Caviness two and Gracie Buzzard two.
