FSU basketball suffers its first ACC loss at Stanford on Thursday

No. 24 Florida State women’s basketball’s (13-3, 3-1 ACC) five-game winning snapped on Thursday night, falling short to Stanford (9-6, 1-3 ACC), 89-84 at the Maples Pavilion.

This was not only FSU’s first ACC loss of the season but also made the Seminoles 1-3 on the road.

Three Seminoles finished in double figures, led by top scorer Ta’Niya Latson with 24 points, seven rebounds and four steals. O’Mariah Gordon finished with 23 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Senior Makayla Timpson added 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. She also recorded three steals.

The Seminoles had a rough shooting night with 38.6 percent from the field and was 10 for 36 from behind the arc.

Everything went their way for the Cardinal when they shot 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3. Brooke Demetre led the Cardinal with 24 points.

Elena Bosgana added 21 points. NuNu Agara was close to a double-double with 17 points and nine boards. Tess Heal added 14 points coming off the bench.

Stanford had full control, leading as many as 17 points in the first quarter. The Seminoles cut the lead to seven after a 10-0 run, trailing 44-37 at the half.

FSU shot the ball better in the third quarter after putting 25 points in the third quarter but still fell behind four entering the fourth.

FSU went on a 7-0 run after Stanford had a 7-0 lead. With less than five minutes left to play, the Seminoles cut Stanford’s lead to two.

Despite its chances of capturing its first game lead, FSU couldn’t stop Stanford’s tempo. Latson’s three-pointer with 28 seconds left was not enough, and the Cardinal was ahead by two possessions as the clock expired.

The Seminoles looked to bounce back on Sunday when they take on No. 25 Cal (15-2, 3-1) at 5 p.m. at the Haas Pavilion.
