Charlie Ewels has won 30 caps for England, with his last appearance against the Barbarians in June 2022

Bath lock Charlie Ewels will captain England A for the team’s first fixture in eight years when they face Portugal in Leicester on Sunday (13:00 GMT).

Ewels is one of five players capped at Test level in the starting line-up, with scrum-half Harry Randall, hooker Jamie Blamire, prop Joe Heyes and flanker Tom Pearson also included.

England hopefuls Oscar Beard and Max Ojomoh form the centre partnership.

Portugal beat Fiji and drew with Georgia at last year’s Rugby World Cup.

It will be England A’s first match since 2016, when they were known as England Saxons and won two games against South Africa A.

“I really believe we have assembled a squad that possesses some of the most exciting developing talent the Gallagher Premiership has to offer,” said England A head coach George Skivington.

England A: Hodge; Murley, Beard, Ojomoh, Muir, Atkinson, Randall, Baxter, Blamire, Heyes, Tuima, Ewels (capt), Pearson, Pepper, Barbeary.

Replacements: Riley, Haffar, Iosefa-Scott, Bamber, Fisilau, Englefield, Shillcock, Hartley.
