EDMONTON — There’s The Great One, and then, there is the next great one.
The Edmonton Oilers have had both of them. First, Wayne Gretzky captained the team from the 80s to four Stanley Cups. Gretzky also collected a few records in the process, many of which still stand today.
The next great one, Connor McDavid, has been no slouch. He’s eliminated a few of Gretzky’s records while being in the conversation for countless others.
And he just hit on another one.
McDavid is one of only three players to average an assist per game in their entire NHL career. Mario Lemieux and Gretzky are the only other players to do it.
That’s a tremendous list to be a part of.
Oilers Connor McDavid is 1 of 3 players in NHL history to average an assist per game in their career.
The others being Wayne Gretzky & Mario Lemieux

McDavid has recorded 674 assists in 672 games. Lemieux recorded 1033 assists in 915 career games, while Gretzky notched 1963 assists in 1487 games.
Earlier this year, the Oilers’ captain reached the impressive milestone of 1000 career points. He’s been busy since then; his career point total is now 1023.
He has 41 points in 27 games this season. He’s currently on a five-game point streak, recording five goals and eight assists. After a slow start, McDavid has certainly been heating up recently.
With 52 games left in the Oilers’ schedule this season, plenty more records can (and should) be broken before this year’s playoffs.
It will be interesting to see what the “Next Great One” will do next.
