Big 12 women’s basketball power rankings: OSU climbs the list with upset win over TCU

And then there was one.

Kansas State is the only unbeaten team left in Big 12 play. It earned that honor thanks to Oklahoma State, which secured a 60-59 home win over No. 9 TCU on Wednesday.

The eighth-ranked Wildcats continue to look like the top team in the conference. But with plenty of time between now and the Big 12 tournament in March, its spot at the top of the food chain is far from a lock.

Let’s get into this week’s conference power rankings:

Last week: 1

This week: at Colorado (Saturday)

Kansas State (19-1, 7-0 Big 12) is on a 14-game win streak, and it hasn’t shown many weaknesses along the way. The Wildcats rank first in the conference in both points per game (83.2) and points allowed per game (52).

This week: at Texas Tech (Saturday); vs. Arizona State (Wednesday)

OSU (16-3, 6-2 Big 12) stunned the country when it earned a 60-59 home win over No. 9 TCU on Wednesday. The Cowgirls erased a 15-point deficit to secure their first top-10 win since 2017, and they showed why they’re legitimate Big 12 title contenders.

This week: vs. Baylor (Sunday)

No. 9 TCU (19-2, 7-1 Big 12) is no longer undefeated in conference play following its 60-59 road loss to OSU on Wednesday. But with an offense that ranks 18th in the nation in points per game (81), the Horned Frogs are still one of the conference’s biggest threats.

Last week: 3

This week: at TCU (Sunday); at UCF (Wednesday)

A slow start sealed No. 23 Baylor’s fate in a 72-57 loss to No. 1 UCLA on Monday. It’s hard to place too much blame on the Bears (16-4, 6-1 Big 12), who’ll look to get back on track when they return to conference play.

Last week: 5

This week: at Arizona (Saturday)

No. 16 West Virginia (16-3, 6-2 Big 12) continued to play its brand of basketball in a pair of blowout wins over Iowa State and Arizona State. The Mountaineers forced a combined 44 turnovers, which they converted into 50 points.

Last week: 6

This week: at BYU (Saturday)

Utah (14-5, 5-3 Big 12) fell short in an 81-73 road loss to No. 9 TCU on Friday, but it bounced back with a 79-61 home win over Kansas on Wednesday. Neither opponent had an answer for Gianna Kneepkens, who averaged 28 points and 8.5 rebounds.

Last week: 7

This week: vs. UCF (Saturday)

After falling short on the road Sunday against No. 16 West Virginia, Iowa State (14-7, 5-3 Big 12) earned an 82-59 home win over BYU on Wednesday. Addy Brown erupted for season highs of 22 points and nine assists to go along with seven rebounds.

Last week: 11

This week: vs. West Virginia (Saturday)

After struggling from deep all season, Arizona (13-8, 4-4 Big 12) caught fire in its wins over Kansas and Cincinnati. The Wildcats went a combined 18 for 44 (40.9%) in that department, and Lauryn Swann led the way by going 5 for 8 (62.5%).

This week: at Arizona State (Saturday); vs. Houston (Wednesday)

Cincinnati (11-6, 3-4 Big 12) secured a 65-59 home win over Colorado on Saturday, but it suffered a 72-62 road loss to Arizona on Wednesday. The Bearcats have been led recently by the stellar play of Tineya Hylton, who’s averaging 23 points on 50% shooting from the field in her last three outings.

Last week: 8

This week: vs. Kansas State (Saturday); at BYU (Wednesday)

Colorado (12-6, 3-4 Big 12) got outscored by 14 points in its 65-59 road loss to Cincinnati on Saturday. Fortunately, it’ll have plenty of time to regroup before its next game against No. 9 Kansas State.

Last week: 9

This week: at Houston (Saturday); vs. Texas Tech (Wednesday)

Kansas (12-7, 2-6 Big 12) has lost four of its last five games. The Jayhawks’ biggest room for improvement is on the glass, where they rank last in the conference in rebounds per game (32.3) and 14th in opponent rebounds per game (36.1).

This week: vs. Oklahoma State (Saturday); at Kansas (Wednesday)

Texas Tech (14-7, 3-5 Big 12) snapped a five-game skid with wins over BYU and Houston. It’ll try to carry that momentum into a tough home game against OSU on Saturday.

Last week: 12

This week: vs. Cincinnati (Saturday); at Oklahoma State (Wednesday)

After going on a three-game win streak earlier this month, Arizona State (8-12, 2-6 Big 12) has lost its last five contests. Stops have been hard to get for the Sun Devils, who rank last in the conference in points allowed per game (74.6).

Last week: 14

This week: vs. Utah (Saturday); vs. Colorado (Wednesday)

A 22-point performance by Delaney Gibb wasn’t enough for BYU (10-8, 1-6 Big 12) to avoid a 70-65 road loss to Texas Tech on Saturday. It’ll try to snap its three-game skid in an upcoming home game against an in-state foe, Utah.

Last week: 15

This week: vs. Kansas (Saturday); at Cincinnati (Wednesday)

After getting an upset win over OSU on Jan. 14, Houston (5-14, 1-7 Big 12) fell short in its next two games against Baylor and Texas Tech. The Cougars are still searching for consistent scoring production, and they rank last in the conference in points per game (59.8).

Last week: 16

This week: at Iowa State (Saturday); vs. Baylor (Wednesday)

UCF (7-10, 0-7 Big 12) is the last winless team in Big 12 play. The Knights have been without Hannah Gusters for their last three games, and the OSU transfer can no longer be found on their roster.
