Barnsley have signed USA defender Donovan Pines on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 season, with an option for a further 12 months.
The 25-year-old has made the free-transfer move after four years with DC United in Washington.
He made 87 league appearances in total for the Major League Soccer side.
“There have been extensive discussions over the last three weeks to be able to bring Donovan to the club,” said acting director of football Bobby Hassell.
“His physical stature allows him to be aerially dominant and combative whilst also possessing fantastic recovery speed, making him a versatile defender against different attacking players.”
Pines, who is 6ft 5ins tall, played under former England captain Wayne Rooney during his time in charge of DC United from the summer of 2022 to October 2023.
He joins a Barnsley side sixth in the League One table, prior to Saturday’s home game against Bristol Rovers.
“I’m really excited to put my foot in the water and test it and do the best I can for the club, ” he said.
“Hopefully, I can contribute in a big way and be a leader on the team.”
