Basketball Star Caitlin Clark Shows Off Michael Phelps Screensaver

During his remarkable international swimming career which spanned a decade-and-a-half, Michael Phelps established as the winningest Olympian ever with 23 gold medals and 28 total medals, but his influence spread far outside of swimming and Olympic sports. Now, one of the biggest stars in all of collegiate sports has showed her admiration for Phelps.

In a video posted to official X account of NCAA Women’s Basketball’s March Madness, Iowa guard Caitlin Clark shared that her phone screensaver is a photo of Phelps racing at the 2016 Olympics.

The photo shows Phelps racing in the 200 butterfly final at the Rio Games, when top rival and defending gold medalist Chad le Clos was swimming one lane over and stealing a glance over at Phelps as they chased gold. Phelps ended up holding off the field to take back the gold medal he had previously won in 2004 and 2008 while le Clos faded to fourth.

Phelps reacted to Clark’s screensaver with his own recognition of Clark’s athletic greatness. “Honored!!! This is so cool!” Phelps wrote on X.

Clark has averaged 32.0 points per game this season for the Hawkeyes, and she broke the all-time scoring records for college basketball this year. She and her team play in the Final Four Friday evening, squaring off against Connecticut in the second national semifinal matchup in Cleveland.
