Feb. 10—Sequoyah’s Lady Indians traveled to Wagoner on Friday, Feb.9 looking to take home a win. They fell short after a slow-scoring fourth quarter, falling to the Lady Bulldogs with a final score of, 45-26.
Emma Culie got things going for SHS as she finished on a layup at the start of the game, following a Wagoner turnover on a missed bucket. Ellee Bryant of WHS would get sent to the foul line and sank both putting the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard. SHS had an answer to that in the form of a three-pointer dialed in by Macy Brown. The defense was clicking on all cylinders when Tessa Trammel picked off a Lady Bulldog pass creating another turnover for WHS. Gracy Shieldnight and Bryant put up back-to-back threes creating momentum for WHS. Lady Indian Rylee Bush created some points by getting good looks to Kya Poafpybitty and Culie for SHS points. Aliya Freeman hit the floor and started to shake up the Lady Bulldog offense with her speed and in-your-face defense. SHS went into the half trailing WHS, 14-17.
The Lady Bulldogs started to sink shots putting the pressure on SHS. WHS had some turnovers, however the Lady Indians were only able to put up five to the Lady Bulldogs 11 not fully capitalizing on their opportunities As the two prepared for the final quarter the score was 28-19, WHS.
Layney Smith and Trammel would both get a steal early on but the SHS offense couldn’t get the shots to fall. The Lady Bulldogs went on a scoring spree that SHS struggled to find an answer to. Having not scored all quarter, Annaston Brown was able to put up two points with two minutes of play left on the clock. With their defense still playing aggressively, Lady Indians Jaycee Gideon and Poafpybitty were able to score late in the fourth. SHS wouldn’t be able to overcome the deficit seeing WHS take the win with a final score of 45-26.
The Lady Indians will play next against Riverside at Dale on Saturday, Feb.10 at 3 p.m.
