Stanford Starts 2028 Recruiting With Huge Verbal From Pan Pacs Finalist Reina Liu

NEW COMMIT: Stanford University has officially begin its Class of 2028 recruiting, landing a huge verbal commitment from one of the top recruits in the class in Reina Liu out of Cary, N.C. Liu currently owns the best times in her class in the 100 back (51.00) and 200 free (1:44.49).

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Stanford University!! First, I am beyond grateful for my family and their unwavering support as well as my friends and teammates who have always been there to encourage me and cheer me on throughout my entire journey. Also, a special thank you to all of my coaches, especially Coach Bruce, Coach Matt, Coach Blake, Coach JP, Coach Rob, and Coach Brad, for always pushing me and helping me become the person I am today. None of this would have been possible without them! Finally, thank you so much to Coach Chris, Coach Annie, and Coach Marcus for believing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity! I can’t wait to be part of the Farm! GO CARD!!”

Liu represents Canada on the international stage. She most recently competed at Pan Pacs where she placed 11th in the 200m back and 12th in the 100m back. At the Canadian Trials in July, she won the 50m free and took second in the 100m free, 100m back, 200m back and 100m fly, as well as third in the 50m back.

She does her club swimming with TAC Titans. She was a six-time finalist at Juniors East last December, earning silver in the 100/200 back as well as bronze in the 200 IM. She won all six of her events at Cary Speedo Sectionals in March after winning the 400 IM at North Carolina Seniors the month prior.

Her best times include:

  • 100 back – 51.00
  • 200 back – 1:52.17
  • 200 IM – 1:55.86
  • 200 fly – 1:55.82
  • 100 fly – 52.00
  • 200 free – 1:44.49
  • 100 free – 48.16
  • 50 free – 21.93

Currently a junior at Raleigh Charter High School, Liu is the two-time defending state champion in both the 100 back and 200 IM at the North Carolina 1A/2A level.

Stanford finished second at the 2026 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships and second at the 2026 NCAA Championships. The Cardinal has won 12 national titles, the most of any program.

Liu’s best time in the 100 back would’ve been first on Stanford’s roster last year and would’ve scored in the B-final at NCAAs while placing seventh at ACCs.
