Peter Nieuwenhuis, a key figure in the development of Dutch archery and former technical director of the national archery federation, has died overnight from 14 to 15 September 2026 at the age of 75.
Nieuwenhuis dedicated many years to Dutch archery, first as national coach and later as technical director. During this time, he played an important role in the development of the national programme, bringing his experience from high-level sport and a strong focus on athlete preparation and performance.
His influence was particularly significant in the professionalisation of elite archery, with a focus not only on sporting performance but also on the development of athletes and coaches. His work helped shape the structures and approach of Dutch archery and contributed to the success of a generation of athletes.
A former elite cyclist, Nieuwenhuis brought a different perspective to archery and was known for his practical approach, technical knowledge and close involvement with the people he worked with.
He also shared his experience beyond the Netherlands, including through a project supporting the development of archery in Brazil ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Nieuwenhuis leaves a lasting legacy in Dutch archery, both through the athletes and coaches he helped develop and through the professional standards he brought to the sport.
World Archery extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, as well as to the Dutch archery community.
Peter Nieuwenhuis’ funeral will take place on 22 September.
