Tom Christie: Kiwi flanker named Newcastle Red Bulls captain

by

Tom Christie has been named as Newcastle Red Bulls captain for the 2026-27 season.

Kiwi flanker Christie, who joined the club last summer, captained Canterbury to success in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship in 2025, and was a three-time winner of Super Rugby with Crusaders before his move to the Prem.

The 28-year-old scored six tries in his 19 games for Red Bulls last season and replaces hooker George McGuigan as skipper.

“Tom is an outstanding professional with natural leadership qualities,” said, external Newcastle’s new head coach Dan McFarland.

“He has experience of being a successful captain from his time in New Zealand and brings a lot to the role, but he will be the first to tell you it doesn’t all revolve around one person.”

Newcastle have signed 25 players for the forthcoming season, as they attempt to improve on finishing bottom for the past four years.
