It’s not a matter of if guard Ja’Leah Williams will notch a triple-double this season for Louisville women’s basketball; it’s when.

The Miami transfer has come close in a few games over the Cardinals’ seven-game winning streak — averaging 9.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.6 steals in that time — but has yet to hit the mark. She was three assists away in Louisville’s 72-62 win over Syracuse after notching 11 points and 10 rebounds. But it’s not something she automatically thinks about.

“When I look up, I’ll be close (and) I’ll be like, dang,” she said. “That’s when I start thinking, like, OK, let me get one. But then I’ve also got to be on my feet are. Don’t try to force it, make the right play and don’t force like a pass when it’s a wide-open shot.”

Williams was originally brough to Louisville because of her defensive prowess, which has been key for the Cardinals. But she’s developed into the Cardinals’ most well-rounded player, displaying an ability to help in multiple areas on and off the court.

“It’s just all about being a team player,” she said, “and then just me being calm and listening to coach Jeff (Walz), what he needs from me as the point guard: less dribbles, quick passes. He does a great job of having me at an elite mindset.”

Williams will have another shot at getting a triple-double today at Virginia Tech. Last year at Miami, she had 10 points and eight rebounds against the Hokies despite the Hurricanes’ 76-52 loss. A year later, Williams is averaging fewer points (7.1 at Miami; 6.5 at Louisville) and rebounds (4.5; 4.1) but has significantly increased her assist total (from 2.7 to 4.0).
