UTEP women’s basketball falls to New Mexico State after second-quarter struggles

New Mexico State’s 18-2 run to finish the second quarter was the undoing for the UTEP women’s basketball team, which fell to the Aggies 65-49 in Las Cruces.

The game was tied 16-16 after an Irene Asensio jumper with 7:18 remaining in the second quarter, but the Miners made just one of six field-goal attempts the rest of the half while turning the ball over six times and UTEP never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

UTEP fell to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA while New Mexico State improved to 9-7, 2-1.

The Miners finished with 27 turnovers to NMSU’s 11 and were outscored on points off turnovers 27-12. The Aggies took 15 more shots then the Miners enabling them to cruise in a game where UTEP shot 41% to to the Aggies’ 37%.

Portia Adams was the only UTEP player in double figures with 10 points, while Ivane Tensaie and Ndack Mbgenue scored nine.

The UTEP women play at home for the first time this calendar year when they take on Liberty. The 7 p.m. Thursday night tip at the Don Haskins Center will be streamed on ESPN+.
