The last time junior guard Ta’Niya Latson was on the court, she was injured on the floor at the Donald L. Tucker Center with concerns about other health before the holiday break.
On Thursday night, Latson returned to the court and didn’t miss a beat. She put on another historic performance in Florida State women’s basketball’s (12-2, 2-0) first road victory over Virginia Tech, 105-74 (9-4, 0-2).
The nation’s top scorer dropped a career-best 40 points, five assists, five steals, three rebounds and a block in the front of the Hokies crowd at Cassell Coliseum. Her 40-point performance matched Natasha Howard’s school record.
In previous games, Latson has gone over and beyond her average. Against SMU, she scored 39 points, and against Tennessee, she dropped 38. Latson recorded her first-ever triple-double during the Paradise Jam last November
Latson shot 18 for 28 from the field and 2 of 3 from the 3-point line. FSU led 52-38 at the half, with Latson picking up 23 points heading to the locker room.
Also in double figures were O’Mariah Gordon, who scored 18 points, and Makayla Timpson, who scored 16. Gordon also added a season-high career-best seven steals of FSU’s 21 steals. FSU shot a season-high 58 percent from the floor.
FSU’s 105-point game is the third-highest in the ACC game in program history. The Seminoles average 94.9 points per game, which is second in the country. It is also their fifth game, scoring over 100.
The Seminoles will return to Donald L. Tucker Center on Sunday to host Syracuse (6-7, 0-2) at 2 p.m. before going out west to face Stanford (0-2) and No. 20 California (13-2, 1-1) next week.
