Dec. 25—***
I’ve got a beef with Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Specifically, that there is no room at the Peach Bowl for the big beef, Texas mascot Bevo.
While he isn’t quite as cool as Colorado’s Ralphie, Bevo is a special part of college football. Hard to believe they can’t find enough room for the big guy at the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
Texas plays Arizona State and is a 13 1/2-point favorite in Wednesday’s game.
If the Longhorns advance to the semifinal round against the Ohio State-Oregon winner, hopefully there is enough space for Bevo.
Texas was able to have Bevo at its first-round CFP game against Clemson. Of course that game was at home, familiar territory for Bevo.
The tournament is a good thing overall and it is important that the folks in charge keep as many traditions going as possible. The Peach Bowl acknowledged that while also pointing out the difficulty of having 1,700-pound Bevo close to players, personnel and media members.
No such problem for Arizona State at this game. “Sparky” is a person dressed in a devil costume.
Of the eight remaining teams, only Texas and Georgia have live mascots.
