Iowa transfer portal WR target headed for Big 12 pastures

One of the Iowa Hawkeyes‘ transfer portal targets is headed elsewhere.

Former Idaho wide receiver Jordan Dwyer announced his commitment to TCU on Saturday. Iowa doled out an offer to Dwyer a week ago.

A star with the Vandals at the FCS level, Dwyer enjoyed a breakout 2024 campaign. The 6-foot, 195 pound wide receiver racked up 1,192 receiving yards on 78 catches and had 12 touchdown grabs.

Dwyer registered five games with 100-plus receiving yards in 2024.

The Puyallup, Wash., native tallied 29 receptions, 489 receiving yards and five touchdowns during the Vandals’ final three games of the 2024 season. That included Idaho’s two FCS playoff games.

Iowa has added just the lone player from the transfer portal thus far. Former Auburn quarterback Hank Brown inked with the Hawkeyes and has actually already joined the team for its final bowl practices.

“It’s like anything you do in the portal. If you go to the portal, you’re trying to improve your depth, trying to improve the level of competition at any given position. Obviously, we’re a little thin at that spot right now body-wise. Need some guys that we think have a chance to really develop and grow.

“I know Tim has been really thorough with his evaluations on everybody, including high school film. That was a big part of the evaluation, going back and watching all the prospects that we look at in high school, following it to whatever college tape may be there. I think the things that Tim is looking for, he found that with Hank,” Ferentz said of Brown.

As the Hawkeyes seek more offensive additions out of the transfer portal, Iowa is hosting former Chattanooga wide receiver Sam Phillips.

Phillips visited East Carolina before visiting the Virginia Tech Hokies last Thursday.

Phillips reeled in 154 receptions for 2,108 receiving yards with nine touchdowns during his time at Chattanooga. In 2024, Phillips caught 50 passes for 823 yards with three scores.

Phillips was honored as a first-team All-Southern Conference offensive member this past season. The Cartersville, Georgia, native was recognized as a Southern Conference All-Freshman team selection and freshman All-American by Phil Steele during the 2022 college football season.
