Dec. 18—From the opening tip there was little doubt in the eventual outcome of the basketball game being played out at South Decatur Tuesday. Visiting Christian Academy Madison was held to just two points in the first quarter and one point in the second quarter as the Lady Cougars rolled to a 72-16 victory.
The Lady Cougars move back over the .500 mark at 7-6. South has a little break, not hitting the hardwood again until Dec. 26 when the Lady Cougars face Madison in the Arrow Container Holiday Classic hosted by Hauser.
South set the tone early, pouring in 27 points in the first eight minutes. Paige McQueen scored 11 points, including a 3-pointer for the Lady Cougars. Dalilah Martin chipped in with eight points in the quarter. Makayla Puckett, Makayla Somers and Taylor Somers all scored in the first as South le 27-2.
South outscored Christian Academy 15-1 in the second quarter. Six Lady Cougars got into the scoring column, led by Makayla Somers with four points. Martin hit a 3-pointer in the quarter. South led 42-3 at the half.
Christian Academy got some offense going in the third quarter, scoring six points. South countered with six from Taylor Somers, four from Makayla Somers, two from McQueen and one from Raegan Benge to take a 55-9 lead to the fourth quarter.
A pair of 3-pointers by Christian Academy’s Skirvin helps the visitors to their best quarter of seven points. South had six players score, led by Riley Benge’s six points as South closed out the 72-16 win.
Three Lady Cougars scored in double figures: McQueen 15, Martin 11 and Makayla Somers 11. Riley Benge and Taylor Somers both had eight points. Puckett finished with six points followed by Raegan Benge five, Liz Bennett four and Lilly Murray one.
Makayla Somers had a team-high eight rebounds. Puckett dished out a team-high seven assists. Martin finished with a team-high five steals.
Greensburg 75 Connersville 39
No. 1 Greensburg welcomed the Lady Spartans of Connersville to town Tuesday for EIAC basketball action. Greensburg led by 15 points at the half and then held the Lady Spartans to a total of 14 points in the second half en route to the 75-39 victory.
Greensburg is 13-0 overall and 4-0 in the EIAC. Connersville drops to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 21-12 led after the first quarter and extended the lead to 40-25 at the half. Greensburg outscored Connersville 13-11 in the third quarter and pulled away with a 22-3 run in the fourth quarter.
Four Lady Pirates scored in double figures: Claire Larrison 26, Mary Harmon 16, Leah West 12 and Mylie Wilkison 11. Aly Powers had five points followed by Emma McQueen three and Emma Kuntz two.
Greensburg travels to South Ripley Saturday.
North Decatur 61 Jac-Cen-Del 39
North Decatur ended a three-game skid by knocking off visiting Jac-Cen-Del 61-39. The Lady Chargers improve to 6-4 on the season while the Lady Eagles drop to 5-6.
Both teams were firing on all cylinders offensively in the first quarter. The teams combined for 43 points in the first eight minutes with North leading 23-20 heading to the second quarter. North outscored JCD 9-6 in the second quarter to lead 32-26 at the half.
The second half is where the Lady Chargers put some distance between the two teams. In the third, North outscored JCD 15-7 and in the fourth, North doubled up the Lady Eagles 14-7 to secure the 61-39 victory.
North’s Madi Allen led all scorers with 33 points. Carmen Thackery tallied seven points and five assists for the Lady Chargers. Kelsey Haley and Jo Whitaker both finished with six points. Ally Whitaker scored five points and Clare Kiner scored four points.
In the game, North hit 5-of-11 from the charity stripe. JCD connected on 8-of-14 free throws.
