Christmas comes early tonight in the form of a packed night of men’s college basketball on Peacock, with coverage of four games kicking off at 6pm ET. As part of that slate, the Valparaiso Beacons (5-4) visit the Ohio State Buckeyes (6-4) at 8pm ET. It’s the first meeting between the two schools since 2011, when the Buckeyes dominated the Beacons 80-47.
Valparaiso is coming off a 16-point win over Central Michigan their last time out, which snapped them out of a two-game losing skid. The Beacons are also coming off a tough 2023-24 season in which they went 7-25 and finished last in the Missouri Valley Conference. It was their first under head coach Roger Powell Jr., who’s pushing for a turnaround in year two and trying to get Valparaiso to its first winning season since 2019-20.
The Buckeyes are seeking some course correction of their own tonight — after starting the season 5-1, they’ve lost three of their last four to sit 6-4 overall (1-1 Big Ten). They’re coming off an ugly 91-53 loss to No. 2 Auburn on Saturday, and their only win in their last four games came against Rutgers at home. The key to success for Ohio State so far this season has been junior guard Bruce Thornton, who’s left to fill the gaps created by the departure of four of the program’s top five scorers after last season. Thornton leads the team in scoring with 14.9 points per game, but was held to just three points in that blowout loss to Auburn.
