Dec. 6—Traveling for non-district play, Tahlequah basketball split a two-game series with the hosting Stilwell Indians.
The Lady Tigers opened the night with a commanding win over the Lady Indians. In game two, the Tigers couldn’t get their offense kicking as the Indians sent the fans home happy with a win.
Lady Tigers 54, Lady Indians 41
After a back-and-forth first half, the Lady Tigers came out of halftime and quickly flipped a four-point deficit to a four-point lead very quickly.
“Anytime you win on the road it’s a good win,” Lady Tiger head coach David Qualls said. “Another case in our game where I thought we started getting better as the game went on, especially on offense.”
In the first half, the Lady Tigers were a little stagnant on offense, allowing the Lady Indians to take a 24-20 lead going into halftime.
After putting up just eight points in the second quarter, the Lady Indians turned the corner for a big third quarter.
Coming out of halftime, the Lady Tigers were on fire scoring 23 points to take a 43-35 lead into the fourth quarter. Carsyn Gilbert started the game with seven points, before going stone cold in the second. Gilbert rebounded in the third to make all six of her free throws.
Overall Giblert went to the free throw line 15 times making 13 points.
During opening day, the Lady Tigers struggled from the charity stripe making just 30% of their tries. Against SHS, the Lady Tigers made their first 14 free throw attempts.
“It was a lot better, I didn’t realize we had the streak that we had going. That is part of the little things coaches talk about,” Qualls said.
Indians 59, Tigers 38
The Tigers couldn’t get their offense to flow for the second straight game in their loss to SHS.
“We just weren’t very consistent overall, especially on offense,” THS head coach David Qualls said. “It was another game we didn’t get into a flow that we wanted to. We are just searching for guys to step up right now.”
Early in the game, the Tigers got into trouble when their top scorer Cash McAlvain picked up his third foul with two minutes out of the second quarter. That kept the senior out for the rest of the half.
“There were a couple 50-50 calls that didn’t go his way,” Qualls said. “After that our offense shut down, we got some rhythm then he got those fouls.”
Coming out of halftime, McAlvain made a big difference in scoring for the Tigers. Coming out of the locker room, McAlvain notched 16 of his 22 points. That marks the second straight game in which McAlvain scored more than 20 points.
THS is back in action on the road on Friday, Dec. 13 at Coweta. The girls kick off action at 6 p.m. with the boys starting right after they finish.
