Oregon’s record is unblemished after three weeks of the men’s basketball season.
Granted, to get to 5-0 the Ducks needed a thrilling second-half rally from a double-digit deficit to beat Oregon State in Corvallis on Thursday.
Next up will be their most challenging week of nonconference play with games against No. 20 Texas A&M on Tuesday and San Diego State on Wednesday in the first two rounds of the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.
The eight-team tournament will conclude Saturday with the championship round based on the results from the first two days.
All games are being played at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
“We’re gonna have to play our tails off down there,” coach Dana Altman said. “There aren’t any gimmes and we’re gonna have to play so much more physical, so much harder. I hope our guys understand that.”
Center Nate Bittle and point guard Jackson Shelstad led Oregon’s comeback against the Beavers. Bittle set career-highs with 23 points and 14 rebounds and is the Ducks leader with averages of 16.2 points and 10.2 rebounds. Shelstad had a season-high 15 points and tied his season-high with six assists. He’s averaging 8.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists.
Texas A&M is 4-1 including a 71-64 win at home against then-No. 22 Ohio State on Nov. 15.
The Aggies are led by guard Zhuric Phelps (16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds per game), guard Wade Taylor IV (14.0 ppg), who has made 15 3-pointers and is shooting 42.9% from that range, and forward Henry Coleman III (11.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg).
SDSU is 2-1 and coming off a loss to No. 3 Gonzaga on Nov. 18.
The Aztecs, who will open with a game against No. 19 Creighton at 11 a.m. Tuesday, are led by guard Nick Boyd (14.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg), guard BJ Davis (14.0 ppg) and guard Miles Byrd (10.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg).
The teams in the other half of the bracket are No. 7 Houston, No. 9 Alabama, Rutgers and Notre Dame.
