Latest Garrett Crochet trade buzz: One interested team drops out due to asking price

by

Here is the latest trade buzz on White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet, who is expected to be moved during the 2024 MLB offseason…

Dec. 11, 11:03 a.m.

One team that was interested in trading for Crochet is no longer engaged in talks with the White Sox due to what they deemed an asking price that was too high.

“We’re out. They wanted three of our top prospects. Three. We can’t do that,” one high-ranking team source told Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated.

The specifics regarding how high the aforementioned prospects ranked on that team’s list are unclear.

The expectation has been that it would take quite a haul to land Crochet, a 25-year-old who has two years of team control remaining and will earn roughly $3 million in 2025.

It is fair to worry about his durability given his injury history and the fact that he just became a starter in 2024. But Crochet was injury-free all season while throwing a career-high 146.0 innings.

The Red Sox have “not been an aggressor” on a potential trade for Crochet, per Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive, who note that the Mets, Yankees, and Reds have been more aggressive.

Per MassLive, the Red Sox — who were bidding for Max Fried before he signed an eight-year deal with the Yankees on Tuesday night — are preparing an offer for free agent Corbin Burnes.

If the Red Sox land Burnes, it would seemingly make it even less likely that they would trade multiple top prospects for Crochet.

Boston has one of the best farm systems in baseball, and could likely present the White Sox with a more attractive trade proposal for Crochet than any other interested team if they so choose.

As far as the Yankees, the Fried signing could possibly take them out of the running for Crochet.

The Mets and Yankees are among the “most aggressive suitors” for Crochet, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic.

In addition to the New York teams, the Red Sox, Phillies, and Orioles are among those interested in dealing for the left-hander.

The White Sox have made it known that they are seeking up-the-middle prospects in a potential deal for Crochet.

Crochet, 25, has two years of team control remaining, as he’s arbitration-eligible for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

When Crochet was the subject of trade rumors during the deadline last season, he made it clear that he was open to signing a long-term deal before hitting free agency.
