Texas A&M (9-2) came on strong in the second half to beat No. 11 Purdue (8-3) by 70-66 in the Indy Classic at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse

At times, the distinction between solid defense and careless basketball is subtle, evident in this game. The first half featured numerous turnovers, particularly by A&M, which tallied double-digit mistakes. This allowed Purdue to stay competitive, gaining momentum from beyond the arc with four crucial three-pointers and some quick fast-break scores.

Despite the turnovers, Texas A&M forward Pharrel Payne and guard Hayden Hefener made a few clutch baskets near the end of the half to tie the game. Then the Aggies do what they are known for, and Zhuric Phelps and Henry Coleman went 3-4 at the free-throw line to take a 38-35 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Texas A&M transformed into a defensive powerhouse reminiscent of the 1985 Bears, putting Purdue on its heels. Every shot faced intense pressure, and A&M capitalized by sinking shots, igniting a 12-0 run that led them to a 62-52 advantage with under five minutes remaining. The Boilermakers rallied back to narrow the gap to six points, but it was too late for a comeback, allowing A&M to secure a 70-66 victory.

GAME NOTES:

  • Pharrel Payne went 6-6 for 16 point and 9 rebounds

  • The Aggies out rebounded Purdue 34-23

  • 44% FG / 40.9% 3PT / 70.8% FT

Texas A&M will return home to face Houston Christian at Reed Arena on Dec. 20 at 9:00 a.m. CST. The game can be watched on ESPN+/SECN+.
