Dec. 15—Jordan Edwards, a key member of the Gateway girls basketball team’s surge to the top, including helping the Gators win the WPIAL Class 5A title in 2018, is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Princeton women’s basketball team.
She arrived on the Princeton campus after one year as the director of operations for the women’s program at High Point University where she played her final three collegiate seasons.
High Point won 20 games last season and took part in the WBIT tournament.
“It means the world to be joining such a prestigious and historic program,” Edwards said to goprincetontigers.com upon her hiring.
“To be surrounded by an incredible, hardworking staff is truly a blessing because I have the opportunity to learn and grow. On top of that, working with such bright and talented women is going to be a lot of fun. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity (Princeton head coach) Carla (Berube) has presented me with, and I’m pumped to assist in keeping the Title Town streak rolling.”
Edwards started her collegiate career at Niagara in 2018 and appeared in 61 games over two seasons before transferring to High Point in the Big South.
In three seasons at High Point through her graduate-student season in 2022-23, Edwards averaged 7.1 points, 4.2 assists and 3.1 records per game in 87 contests.
She helped the Panthers reach their first NCAA Tournament in 2021.
Evan Whiteside
After a stellar collegiate wrestling career at Thiel College which concluded last March, Evan Whiteside, a former Gateway standout, agreed to stay with the Bobcats’ program this season as an assistant coach.
The two-time Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion at 125 pounds capped his Thiel career with a fifth-place finish at 133 at the 2024 NCAA Division III Southeast Regional at Lycoming College in Williamsport.
He went 2-1 in the championship bracket on Day 1 with both a pin and a major decision.
Whiteside came back on Day 2 and won three of four matches in the consolation bracket with a pin, a decision and a technical fall.
“Whatever I can do to help the program and help others, I am willing to do,” Whiteside said to thielathletics.com about staying in the program.
“Thiel is a great place to be, and I’m excited to help these guys improve every day.”
Ryan Greggerson
Ryan Greggerson, a 6-foot-8 junior forward, made his first start of the season for the Pitt-Greensburg men’s basketball team in the Bobcats’ Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game at Penn State Behrend on Dec. 7.
The Gateway grad had served as one of the first off the bench in UPG’s previous seven contests in the early season.
Greggerson averaged 7.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in the Bobcats’ eight games.
He recorded a double-double with season highs in points (15) and rebounds (11) in UPG’s 78-65 nonconference victory over Geneva on Nov. 30. Six of his 11 rebounds came at the offensive end of the court.
Greggerson also scored in double figures with 10 points against Waynesburg on Nov. 12, and tallied nine rebounds against Lancaster Bible four days later.
A key aspect of his game performance so far this season has been his effort from the free-throw line where he converted 18 of his first 19 attempts (.947).
Lexi Margolis
Lexi Margolis is one of three members of the Pitt-Johnstown women’s basketball team who has started all 10 games this season.
The Gateway grad and Mountain Cat junior guard is fourth on the team in scoring at 6.9 points per game. She also is averaging 3.4 rebounds a contest.
Margolis leads the team with 14 field goals from 3-point range.
She owns a trio of double-figure scoring efforts, most recently hitting for 11 points to go along with four steals, two assists and a season-best nine rebounds in a game against Mansfield on Nov. 23.
She also tallied 12 points in an 82-68 win over Davis & Elkins on Nov. 16, and 10 in a close four-point setback against Frostburg State on Nov. 9.
Teddy Almeter
Monroeville resident and Serra Catholic graduate Teddy Almeter was one of two Grove City men’s soccer standouts to earn United Soccer Coaches All-Region honors for NCAA Regional VII.
Almeter, a junior goalkeeper with the Wolverines, picked up a selection to the third team through voting conducted by the region’s head coaches.
He started all 19 matches in goal for the 2024 season. He recorded a 0.80 goals-against average and posted seven shutouts. He held six other opponents to only one goal.
Almeter’s 0.80 GAA ranks fourth on Grove City’s single-season record list while his seven shutouts are tied for fifth for a single season.
He ranked second in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in goals-against average, third in shutouts and third in save percentage (.795). His 0.88 career goals-against average ranks second in program history.
Grove City finished 12-4-3 overall, including a 7-2-1 mark in conference. The Wolverines capped their season Nov. 9 with a 2-1 loss to No. 1 Franciscan in the PAC championship game.
